Basic Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
40 hour class

This 40 hour course is designed for forensic professionals and law enforcement officers with intermediate to expert experience. During lecture and practical exercises students will learn to identify, document and analyze bloodstain patterns. Topics include fluid dynamics, limitations of BPA, pattern recognition, impact angle calculations, area of convergence and much more.

Bloodstain Pattern Analysis requires a deep technical understanding of blood’s dynamics and how these dynamics help investigators determine what may have happened at a crime scene. This course helps prepare students to recognize types of bloodstain patterns and understand how to document and analyze those patterns properly. Students should expect to gain a better understanding of how to events at a crime scene lead to certain bloodstain patterns and how to properly approach scenes where blood is a key element.

It is recommended that students have completed a basic crime scene processing class and/or have some crime scene field experience prior to taking this course.

Introduction to Bloodstain Pattern Analysis Documentation
2 day class

This course is designed for law enforcement officers who want to learn how to correctly recognize, document, and collect bloodstains and bloodstain patterns for later analysis by a bloodstain pattern analyst. Students will be taught terminology, pattern recognition and documentation methods that will ensure the possibility that the patterns can be reconstructed and analyzed from photographs at a later date. This course is most popular with law enforcement officers that do not readily have access to bloodstain pattern analysis experts at their crime scenes or agency.

Students need to bring a digital SLR camera with detachable lenses that they are familiar with using, flash, tripod and spare batteries.

Blood in the classroom for educators
2 day class

This course is designed for high school teachers or post-secondary educators interested in furthering their understanding in this field of forensic testing. This class encourages its students to explore the world of bloodstain patterns with hands-on experiments and exercises they can bring back to their classrooms.

This class will touch on the history, physics and mathematics involved in Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, and will include case studies, but the majority of the class will be hands-on experiments and practical exercises. The hands on activities provide experiments, experience and ideas that educators can take back to their classrooms for incorporation into their curriculum or discussion for their applied science or forensic science class topics.
